A UAE Patient's Knee Replacement: From Cane to Hiking in 12 Weeks

· · 8 min read

Khalid, 64, had been using a cane for two years before flying from Dubai to China for bilateral knee replacement. His decision process, the surgery, and a remarkable recovery curve.

The Slow Decline

Khalid (name changed) is a 64-year-old retired oil executive from Abu Dhabi. He had been managing bilateral knee osteoarthritis for nearly a decade — first with NSAIDs, then injections, then a cane. By 2025 he could no longer pray comfortably, and his Friday hikes with his sons had stopped entirely.

The Decision

UAE quotes for bilateral simultaneous total knee arthroplasty (TKA) ran AED 280,000–400,000. Through SSAnkang our partner orthopedic center quoted approximately one-third the price for the same Stryker Triathlon implants (see our knee/hip replacement guide).

Khalid's questions to our case manager focused on three things: surgeon experience, anesthesia safety for bilateral simultaneous (rather than staged), and post-op rehabilitation. We connected him with the senior surgeon for a video consultation; the surgeon performs 350+ knee replacements annually with a published 30-day complication rate of 1.8%.

Pre-Op Weeks at Home

Three months before surgery, our case manager set up a daily 10-minute video PT routine to strengthen quadriceps and hip flexors. Pre-op rehabilitation accelerates post-op recovery by 30–40%. He stuck with it religiously.

The Trip

Khalid flew Dubai → Beijing direct (8h on Emirates), then HSR to the partner hospital city. His wife traveled with him. They stayed in the hospital guest suite for the inpatient phase, then a serviced apartment for outpatient PT.

Surgery Day

Bilateral simultaneous TKA under spinal + sedation. Total procedure time: 2 hours 50 minutes. Estimated blood loss: 320mL combined. No transfusion needed.

Recovery

  • Day 1: Sat up, did ankle pumps and quad sets. Standing with walker for 60 seconds in the afternoon.
  • Day 2: Walked 8 meters with walker.
  • Day 4: Walked the hospital corridor (40m) with walker.
  • Day 7: Discharged. Walking with two crutches, full weight bearing.
  • Day 14: Single crutch outdoor walking, 200m around the apartment block.
  • Day 21: Cane only, 1km daily walks.
  • Week 6: No cane. Climbing stairs alternating feet.
  • Week 12: Resumed light hiking (3km flat trail) with sons.

What Made the Difference

  1. Pre-op conditioning at home (cannot overstate this)
  2. Daily in-person PT during the China stay (45 minutes, twice daily)
  3. Adjunct TCM modalities — acupuncture for swelling control, gentle tuina for circulation
  4. His wife's constant presence — both for morale and the small but constant tasks recovery requires
  5. Honest pain management — proactive, not reactive

The Numbers

Total cost (surgery + 21-day stay + flights for both + accommodation + coordination): USD 24,800. UAE equivalent estimate: USD 95,000+.

One Year Later

X-rays: implants well-positioned, no loosening, no osteolysis. Knee Society Score: 91/100 (up from 28 pre-op). Khalid sent us photos from a 4-day hike in Oman with his sons. He's 65 now and walks more than he did at 55.
