What is Cochlear Implantation?

A surgical hearing solution for severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. An external sound processor captures sound, transmitted through skin to an implanted receiver, which delivers electrical signals via an electrode array directly to the auditory nerve — bypassing damaged hair cells.

Who is a candidate?

• Severe-to-profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss
• Limited benefit from hearing aids (<50% sentence recognition aided)
• Children: ≥9 months old, no medical contraindications
• Prelingual deafness in children <5 years (best outcomes)

Outcomes

Open-set speech recognition: 70-90% in postlingual adults. Pediatric: age-appropriate language with early implantation. Music appreciation and tonal language perception (Mandarin) improved with multi-strategy programming.
