What is Total Thyroidectomy + I-131?

For differentiated thyroid cancer (papillary, follicular), total thyroidectomy plus selective neck dissection is followed by radioactive iodine (I-131) to ablate residual thyroid tissue and treat microscopic disease. Combined approach achieves excellent cure rates.

Who is a candidate?

Outcomes

5-year survival DTC: >98% for stages I-II, 90% stage III. Permanent hypoparathyroidism: 1-3%. Permanent RLN injury: <1% at expert centers. Recurrence rate: 5-15% lifetime (risk stratified).
